Wireless instrumentation is now available to identify, monitor, and report fugitive emissions for compliance with local, state, federal environmental regulatory agencies, without large capital expenditure and operational complexities. New, highly accurate, low cost, and reliable battery powered pressure relief valve monitoring instruments from Accutech, a Division of Adaptive Instruments Corp. meet the field monitoring and reporting challenges head-on.
Emission regulations require companies to track actual pollutant emissions at each facility in order to determine the type and quantity of pollutants being emitted into the atmosphere. The data is then used to calculate emission fees for each facility. Early detection and correction improve plant efficiency and mitigate reporting and remediation requirements.
The new, self-contained Accutech Wireless Instrumentation Acoustic Monitor Field Units include an acoustic (ultrasonic) sensor element and transceiver providing two-way communications operating in the 900 MHz ISM license-free band, with battery life of up to five years. Reliable, secure frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology as well as a robust error checking and correction scheme validates that accurate data is received. With a transmission range of up to 3,000 feet and installation using non-invasive bolt-on brackets, the wireless monitors are easily installed, even in FM approved, Class I, Division 1 hazardous areas.
For fugitive emissions programs, the units enable companies to conform to requirements such as the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1173 and allow for more accurate annual emissions reporting (AER) under Rule 301. Additional uses for Acoustic Monitor Field Units, with up to 50 individual units transmitting back to a single Base Radio, include monitoring steam traps, automatic tank cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems and other applications that generate ultrasound. The newly introduced product can even monitor on/off conditions of compressor pumps as well as act as a flow switch, each without the cost and complications of hard wiring or penetration of pressure retaining components.
Accutech, a Division of Adaptive Instruments Corp. of Hudson, MA, is known for offering a broad range of microprocessor measurement, monitoring and control instrumentation (called Smart Process Instrumentation) for a wide range of industries, including refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, plastics, oil and gas production, municipal water treatment, food and beverage, and others.
